What is RYDA

Originally Rotary Youth Driver Awareness, the RYDA program is all about Road Safety Education for Year 10 High School Students.  More here

Today the RYDA program is designed by the independent RSE-Road Safety Education body and coordinated by local Rotary clubs.  Funding is arranged locally via grants (from Queensland Transport, RACQ, etc)

Venues on the Sunshine Coast include, Caloundra, Nambour & Noosa. There are seven programs in Caloundra during October with eight participating schools: Unity College and Pacific Lutheran College, Meridan State College, Beerwah State High and Glasshouse Christian College, Kawana State College, Siena Catholic College and Caloundra State High.

Sunshine Coast Passport will be volunteering at a number of these sessions.

The day consists of six sessions led by professional facilitators covering:

  • Road Choices,
  • Crash Investigators
  • The ‘I’ in Drive
  • Mind Matters
  • Drive SOS
  • Speed & Stopping

Rotary Volunteers’ roles are:

  • Session venue Supervisors – set up, ensure laptops etc working, introduce facilitators, time keepers
  • Student Group Leaders – to ensure each group of students gets from one session to the next efficiently and on time

The program generally starts around 9.15am and finishes by 2pm. Morning tea and lunch are provided.

A busy July

It’s been a busy first month launching the Satellite Club, but as ever, our members have found time to volunteer in the community and lend a helping hand to other clubs.

At our first official business meeting, we talked about where we see our club fit within Rotary, our values, and our goals for this year. Over the coming month we will be looking to formally align ourselves with one or two of Rotary’s causes, which we will champion as a club through volunteering efforts with other clubs, partcipating in Rotary Action Groups, supporting specific not for profit organisations, and our own projects.

It’s an exciting time for our club as we are shaping our future priorities and direction. If you are passionate about something, this is a great opportunity to get your voice heard and get involved. We welcome you to join us at one of our meetings and find out more!

July proved to be a very busy month!   While all members may not be able to assist at every event, our members are able to volunteer at those events that suit them.

Some go to extremes to be at volunteer events that start early in the cold, wet winter of the Sunshine Coast.

While some of us volunteered at the RYDA Road Safety Education day at Caloundra Racecourse for Kawana State College, others gathered at Maroochydore State High School for the annual mock interviews with the school’s Year 10 students.  This youth project has been in the safe hands of Maroochydore Rotarybut will now be an Alex Rotary project.  The interviews make such a difference to students preparing for that all important step into the workplace.

Our club

Our Rotary club is a mostly autonomous satellite or extension of the Rotary Club of Alexandra Headland but shares the ideals embraced by ‘Passport’ clubs and so we are known as ‘Sunshine Coast Passport Rotary’.

But I’m just so busy …

Australia has around 29,000 Rotarians, and they are all busy people. Most have demanding jobs, a hectic family life, bills to pay, lawns to mow, dishes to wash, gutters to clean and dogs to walk.

But they still make time to meet regularly and make a difference.

Commitment doesn’t have to interfere with a busy life.

Who can be a Rotarian?

It doesn’t matter if you’re a student, a professional, a stay at home parent, a teacher, a doctor, a tradie or a farmer. We need young and old, retailers, gardeners, athletes, social workers, artists, grandparents and retirees too.

If you have something you care about, and want to make a difference in your community, we need you!

And it’s not all hard work!

Members have a lot of fun while helping others. Rotary combines service with opportunities to make professional connections and friends.

Our Goals

Sunshine Coast Passport Rotary’s goals include:

  • To continue working with our Sponsor club to develop the membership and influence in the community of our club
  • The club has become well known to many of the local Rotary clubs and other NFPs through its volunteering efforts, always turning up when a helping hand was needed at a Rotary community event on the Sunshine Coast. That will continue
  • The innovation and flexibility the club offers so that members can volunteer in ways that suit them will also continue.
  • Sunshine Coast Passport’s ideals of being innovative, and family-friendly will continue to appeal to young professionals and others who are busy in their businesses and with their families
  • Other members of the community will also want to join in our venture to serve others through voluntary work
  • Eventually, Sunshine Coast Passport will charter as a standalone Rotary club
